Easily sync Philips Hue to Alexa by Josh Sherman

Every time we move, I invest just a little more in smart home devices. Although not the most economical option, we are very “all in” on Philips Hue bulbs.

While I really like the product, getting them to play nicely with the Amazon Alexa voice controls has proven to be quite a chore in the past.

The rooms and lighting I set up within the Philips Hue app worked fine, but as soon as I tried a voice command, I was told that the device didn’t exist, or even funnier, that multiple devices shared the same name.

This was especially true when renaming existing lights, as their location changed, and with room grouping in general.

Historically, I would just go through and manually configure things in the Alexa app, which was pretty tedious. This got even worse as we continued to expand our bulb collection.

It turned around, I learned about a voice command you can spit on your Echo, and it takes care of the whole situation swimmingly.

Just say:

Alexa, scan for new devices

After a few minutes, Alexa will announce what she found, and you’re off to the races! This includes syncing not only your lights and rooms, but also your scenes.

Although I haven’t tried it with other smart home devices yet, I have to imagine it will work with other devices as well.
